Home for Sale at Vermont's Cobb Hill

Vermont's Cobb Hill Cohousing Community has a home for sale.  In the best endorsement of the community, the sellers are not moving away, just moving up the hill to a different house:

"The home is a private unit (one bedroom) in the Common House of Cobb Hill.  Share huge beautiful kitchen with other apartment dwellers and community.   Includes den, fireplace, laundry, root cellar, finished attic, wood shop with all kinds of tools, and much more."

Cobb Hill was founded by Donella Meadows, the author of Limits to Growth.

"Green Homes for Sale" Pick of the Week

17961_1_show This beautiful, compact (1600 sq. ft.) house is located in Milagro Cohousing in Tucson, AZ.   Its features include:

"Adobe walls 16" thick, passive solar orientation, dual cooling systems, solar water heater (roof ready for PV), spacious covered front porch with ceiling fan, ocotillo fence, plenty of storage, balcony with stunning mountain views..."

Typical of cohousing communities, homes are clustered together to reduce sprawl. An added benefit is that the community  captures rainwater in cisterns for irrigation, and has constructed its own wetlands to purify greywater naturally.

CoHousing Condo Unit Available in Cotati, CA

Fsplayareaext_4Cohousing Communities are leading the way in green housing and compact designs that don't contribute to sprawl.  Cohousing involves owning one's own house while sharing common areas in the center of the development, as well as a building that often includes a workshop, dining area, music practice area, etc.   One of the members of the Frogsong Cohousing Community in Cotati, CA, is selling their condo.  Nearly all cohousing communities are employing green building, renewable energy, and water conservation as a given.

Cohousing Community Plans Truly Green Building

Nubanusit Neighborhood and Farm is under development in Peterborough, NH, and according to a member of the community, they are planning a high standard of green building:

  • Waste water recovery and highly efficient water use (low flow fixtures/dual flush toilets)
  • Central wood pellet boiler plant using locally produced biomass fuel
  • Energy efficient lighting and wide use of daylighting
  • Roofs oriented to support future solar collectors
  • Healthy indoor air quality w/low-toxicity materials and fresh air ventilation system with heat recovery
  • Durable low maintenance building materials
  • Site preserves wetlands, farm fields, river and woodlands, 1.25 mile walk from Peterborough

We applaud these plans.
