Today's Chicago Tribune features a story by Russell Working about Dick Young, a long-time environmentalist who was an early visionary about the benefits of a green roof, and a key figure in the creation of the Kane County forest preserves. it includes a great picture of Dick by Wes Pope. It's great that we are able to learn from Mr. Young while he is still able to share his knowledge: he is in the early stage of Alzheimers.
Inhabitat's "Prefab Friday" column showcases a new green home design by Michelle Kauffman, the creator of the Glidehouse , and her new design pushes the envelope even further, incorporating a green roof and greywater capture , among other things:
"The home is compact and stunning, with gorgeous xeriscape landscaping, and the most high-tech green materials and sustainable systems available,including a greywater recycling system, green roof, solar panels, and even a spot to plug in your electric vehicle for charging!"
One of my favorite blogs, Brownstoner, features a fantastic green roof in Park Slope, Brooklyn on top of a brownstone, of course. The comments express dismay at the cost, but when one realizes that adding a green roof like this one is akin to adding an entire back garden, the cost is more of an investment that will be sure to pay off.
