This past weekend we visited our friends in Bloomington, Indiana, who live on the historic west side of town. On one of the hottest days of the year, we were inside, kept cool by the ceiling fan and the breeze it drew in through the shaded windows. No AC needed.

I recently had an innovative retrofit called Powerzoning for my existing central air system. It uses naturally cold basement air to cool the house as a sort of "pre-cooling", which delays the AC having to kick on as much. Basically, just running the furnace on "fan" mode pulls the cold air upstairs. Pretty ingenious once you think about it - almost a poor man's form of geothermal cooling.
